Op 28 augustus gaat de Serres Rally 2019 van start in het gelijknamige stadje Serres. Maar de finish is voor het eerst sinds het evenement werd verreden in 2012 niet in Serres. De organisatie zet een nieuwe koers met uit met de finish in het westen van Macedonië. Op 1 januari wordt de finishplaats van de 2019 editie bekend gemaakt. Na twee dagen rijden in de omgeving van Serres zet de rally op 30 augustus koers richting Macedonië. Een nieuwe finishplaats dus, en nieuwe routes! Dat de 35e editie van MOTORbeurs Utrecht de grootste ooit wordt, is inmiddels bekend. Maar liefst ruim 65.000 m2 staat van 14 tot en met 17 februari 2019 in het teken van motoren, shows en nieuws. De voorbereidingen voor MOTORbeurs Utrecht 2019 zijn in volle gang en de online kaartverkoop is van start gegaan. Met een jubileumeditie in het vooruitzicht belooft het een ongekend spektakel te worden tijdens deze 35e editie. De MOTORbeurs Utrecht is al sinds jaar en dag de start van het motorseizoen, ongeacht het weer. Van donderdag 14 tot en met zondag 17 februari 2019 staat heel Nederland traditiegetrouw in het teken van motorrijden. MOTORbeurs in Utrecht heeft zich in de loop der jaren ontwikkeld van een koopjesbeurs tot een motorfestijn. Het huidige aanbod is heel divers: nieuwe modellen, gebruikte motorfietsen, helmen, motorkleding, accessoires, onderdelen, maar ook reizen, verzekeringen en lifestyle producten. Maar dat is nog niet alles want gaandeweg zijn er ook steeds meer activiteiten en entertainment toegevoegd aan MOTORbeurs Utrecht. Denk hierbij aan actie-arena’s met gave (stunt)shows, een workshop theater, diverse podia, competities, een opstapparcours voor mensen die nog geen rijbewijs hebben, sfeervolle cafés en spetterende acts. Na de eerste dag staan Ronald Schoolderman en Marcel Blankestijn aan de leiding in het algemeen klassement van de Roompot Baja Borger, gevolgd door Rick Aarts op ruim een minuut.  Na drie specials zijn de verschillen vooraan klein. Herman Jasper en Ronald Schoolderman reden heel de dag praktische dezelfde tijden. In de avondspecial ging Jasper als eerste van start, kort gevolgd door Schoolderman. Na de eerste van drie rondes was het Schoolderman die weer als eerste voorbij kwam. Herman Jasper wist de proef niet uit te rijden en verloor veel tijd. Dat gold echter voor meer equipes, zoals Eelco Bekker en Sijbrand Booij, die na negen kilometer in de proef te kampen hadden met een kapotte turbo waarna de motor op hol sloeg. De servicemonteurs vervingen nog wel de turbo, zodat er weer gestart kon worden in proef drie. Maar na twee rondes moest de strijd definitief gestaakt worden. En zo waren er heel de dag door verschillende incidenten, die ervoor zorgden dat de monteurs zich vanavond en vannacht niet hoeven te vervelen. De navigatie was pittig op de eerste dag van de Roompot Baja Borger, met veel korte notes. In het Drentse Borger vond vandaag de technische keuring plaats voor alle voertuigen die morgen van start gaan in de Roompot Baja Borger. Zo’n 60 voertuigen doen er mee, verdeeld over vier klassen: T1, T2, Specials en de SSV’s.  Zaterdag worden er drie proeven verreden in de directe omgeving van Borger. Twee overdag en een avondproef die om 19.00 uur van start gaat op het strand van vakantiepark Hunzedal. Voor het publiek is er een aantal kijkplaatsen verzorgd (inclusief horeca) waar de actie van dichtbij mee te maken is. Meer info daaromtrent vindt je op de website van de Baja Borger. De deelnemers kunnen allerlei soorten ondergrond verwachten, en doordat het weinig geregend heeft de afgelopen maanden is de verwachting dat op sommige stukken het gas helemaal open kan. Verdeeld over twee dagen krijgen de deelnemers 260 kilometer proef voor hun kiezen. Dat dat nog kan in Nederland kun je rustig uniek noemen! 

The World Enduro Super Series title fight heats up this weekend as the series heads to Sweden for the Gotland Grand National, the penultimate round of the 2018 season. With six rounds now complete, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Billy Bolt (GB) leads the way with Germany’s Manuel Lettenbichler (KTM) and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Josep Garcia (ESP) in close contention. Marking the 35th edition of the Swedish classic, this year’s Gotland Grand National is set to welcome over 3000 competitors as the battle intensifies to become the ULTIMATE ENDURO CHAMPION. A ‘must-do’ event on the Swedish racing calendar, the three-hour Cross-Country race – situated on the small island of Gotland – attracts thousands of annual competitors. Its rocky terrain, with technical tree rooted forestry tracks and marshy wetlands, ensures the 22-kilometre long course provides a physically demanding race for all. The third series leader in as many races, Billy Bolt currently holds the upper hand over his championship rivals. Winning the opening event back in May, Bolt has found rejuvenated form during the second half of the season. With back-to-back podium results at Red Bull 111 Megawatt and the Hawkstone Park Cross-Country the Brit looks to build on his advantage with a strong performance in Gotland. Sitting just 125 points behind Bolt – with a remaining 2000 points up for grabs – Manuel Lettenbichler is a close second. The German privateer has been sensational this season proving himself as a championship contender regardless of the terrain or Enduro discipline faced. Weighing into the title fight with a dominant victory at round six in Great Britain, Josep Garcia will also be a rider to watch in Sweden. The Classic Enduro specialist was blisteringly fast during the Hawkstone Park Cross-Country and will be an expected front runner. Aiming to settle for nothing less than a win, Garcia also knows that the sizeable entry list in Gotland could seriously enhance his title hopes should his rivals have any problems. Also enjoying a late championship charge, Poland’s Taddy Blazusiak (KTM) is fifth in points and could easily play spoiler to Bolt, Lettenbichler and Garcia. A fierce competitor and one never to be counted out, Blazusiak will be aiming for the podium in Sweden. Runner-up to Garcia at round six, Britain’s Nathan Watson (KTM) is another rider finding his groove late in the season. Favouring the faster Cross-Country riding, Watson knows that a potential debut WESS win is within his grasp. Separated by just 16 points, Graham Jarvis (Husqvarna – GB) and Paul Bolton (KTM – GB) sit eighth and ninth respectively in the championship standings. Gas Gas Factory Racing’s Lars Enockl (AUT) completes the top 10 and will look for another strong outing this weekend. With 3000 competitors taking to the start line, local knowledge is set to be a key factor in the outcome of the race as the leading riders manage both track hazards and high volumes of traffic. Winner in 2017, Norway’s Kjetil Gundersen will be a rider WESS regulars will have to watch come race day. So too will Swede Albin Elowson. Runner-up in 2017 – his best Gotland Grand National result to date – Elowson also finished 11th at the Tréfle Lozérien AMV and will aim to show his speed once again in this year’s WESS championship. With eight Gotland Grand National victories to his name, Mats Nilsson (SWE) is the most successful rider in the history of event. Despite claiming his debut win back in 1997, 49-year-old Nilsson finished on the podium in 2017, proving age and experience is every match for youthful exuberance. Fourth last year, Rikard Hansson (SWE) will look for another top result, while all eyes will be on Joakim Ljunggren – one of Sweden’s most successful Enduro riders – to see if he can finally win his first Gotland Grand National. The seventh and penultimate round of the 2018 World Enduro Super Series – Gotland Grand National – takes place this weekend, October 26/27.

Sinds dit jaar is er een nieuw totaalklassement in het leven geroepen voor de deelnemers aan drie verschillende rally’s. Deelnemers aan de Tuareg Rallye, Rally Albania en Serres Rally strijden samen om de meeste punten voor de Rallye Raid Trophy. Na de finish van de Serres Rally werden de eerste trofeeën uitgereikt aan de eerste winnaars. Bij de mannen ging de winst naar Kreidl Ferdinand wie de Rally Albania op zijn naam schreef en sterk eindigde in de Tuareg Rallye en Serres Rally. De nummer twee Thorsten Kaiser won de Tuareg Rallye maar viel helaas uit tijdens de Serres Rally. Hij werd dan ook tijdens uitreiking vertegenwoordig door zijn zoontje. De deelnemers van de Serres Rally kregen het op de laatste dag nog even flink voor de kiezen met een echte enduro proef van negentig kilometer, die vooral in de eerste vijftien kilometer erg zwaar was. Het zorgde er echter niet voor dat er in de top drie iets veranderde, met Stefan Svitko als winnaar, gevolgd door Wesley Pittens en Paul Spierings. Achter Pittens en Spierings was Yves Ensing de derde Nederlander in het klassement op een achtste plaats. Martien Jimmink wist nog dicht bij de top tien te komen met een 12e plaats, al had hij het erg zwaar op de laatste dag. Peter Jansen volgde op een veertiende plaats. De 2018 editie van de Serres Rally is qua lengte van de specials beduidend zwaarder dan de voorgaande jaren. Met een special van 280 kilometer kregen de deelnemers het vandaag behoorlijk voor hun kiezen. Aan de top van het klassement geen wijzigingen. Stefan Svitko heeft ruim twee uur voorsprong op Wesley Pittens, die op zijn beurt een kwartier voorsprong heeft op Paul Spierings. Svitko kan de rally met een laatste enduro special van negentig kilometer gecontroleerd uitrijden. Pittens en Spierings vonden elkaar weer in het begin van de special, waar velen aan het zoeken waren naar de juiste route. Samen reden ze de rest van de special uit. Omdat Spierings achter Pittens (een vijfde tijd vandaag) gestart was, reed hij de tweede tijd, en snoepte drie minuten van zijn achterstand af op Pittens die nog altijd bijna een kwartier bedraagt. Beste Nederlander achter dit duo was Yves Ensing, die een zevende tijd reed. Dat bracht hem op de tiende plaats in het algemeen klassement. Herwin Hopmans ging er hard vanaf terwijl hij Roberto Barbieri probeerde te volgen, om in het laatste deel er nog een keer af te stappen, met flink wat blauwe plekken als gevolg en schade aan de navigatie apparatuur. Hopmans is door Ensing gepasseerd in het klassement en is nu elfde algemeen. Martien Jimmink is opgeschoven naar de dertiende plaats, en ook Peter Jansen blijft constant presteren en is zestiende algemeen. Kers op de taart De enduro proef van morgen is traditioneel de moeilijkste en technisch meest uitdagende proef van de hele rally. Negentig kilometer intensief navigeren met een aantal steile klimmen en afdalingen. Start en finish is vanaf het parkeerterrein bij het hotel. De snelste man zal er zeker twee en een half uur voor nodig hebben. Verkeer rijden kan voor veel tijdsverlies zorgen, dus het is zaak tot de laatste meters scherp te blijven. Het beeld blijft hetzelfde in de Serres Rally. Stefan Svitko bepaalt het tempo, en Wesley Pittens en Paul Spierings kunnen vooralsnog alleen volgen. Met een flink aantal rijders in de top twintig is het gemiddelde niveau bij de Nederlanders absoluut niet verkeerd. De dag begon met een mooie verbindingsetappe van 120 kilometer weer terug naar Griekenland. Deze was zelfs mooier dan de proef die om 12.00 uur van start ging. Paul Spierings: ”Vorig jaar reden we deze verbinding als proef. Door de vele regen van de voorgaande dagen waren de paden er een stuk slechter aan toe, dus misschien was het wel beter dat we er nu niet op snelheid overheen gingen.” Spierings kwam als derde aan de finish, achter Svitko en Pittens, maar staat in de uitslag als vierde, wat als het goed is nog gecorrigeerd gaat worden. De 108 kilometer lange special werd door Svitko in iets meer dan twee uur voltooid. Zeker het tweede deel was behoorlijk snel, de verschillen onderling waren minder groot dan in de voorgaande dagen. Yves Ensing reed een prima negende tijd, in zijn eerste rally schuift Ensing junior steeds iets verder naar voren. Hopmans is in het algemeen klassement nog altijd tiende, ondanks een vijftiende tijd in de proef. Martien Jimmink ging er vandaag ook weer eens goed voor zitten, en was zeer tevreden met zijn elfde tijd. Zestiende algemeen is hij nu. Drie Nederlanders kwamen niet aan de start vandaag: Guillaume Martens, Rob Geelen en David van den Toorn. Op de zesde dag staat er wederom een lange special op het programma, van 280 kilometer, door de bergen van Lailias. Uitslagen dag 5 SS 9 E6  Algemeen Klassement      

De Nederlanders hebben een goede vierde dag van de Serres Rally afgewerkt. Wesley Pittens en Paul Spierings werden tweede en derde terwijl Herwin Hopmans de derde Nederlander in de top-tien was. Even na 9.00 uur op dinsdagochtend vertrokken de rijders in de eerste proef van de dag nadat ze een verbinding van zo’n 45 kilometer hadden gereden naar de Bulgaarse grens. In die eerste proef, die een beetje enduro-achtig was, volgden deelnemers lange tijd de grens. De proef werd lastig gemaakt door de vele regen uit de voorgaande dagen waardoor de paden soms zelfs weggespoeld waren en deelnemers fysiek sterk moesten zijn om dat te trotseren. De tweede proef over 70 kilometer was een stuk sneller. Het eerste stuk van de proef bracht deelnemers door een heuvelachtig gebied waarna ze op snelle graspaden kwamen waar de snelheden flink omhoog gingen, hoewel het qua navigatie wel lastig bleef. Stefan Svitko kwam rond 14.00 uur in de middag aan de finish en was opnieuw de sterkste met daarachter Wesley Pittens die op zijn beurt iets meer afstand nam van Paul Spierings. Die werd derde, maar Spierings heeft nog slechts vier minuten voorsprong op Jan Zlabek, een taaie rijder uit Slowakije. Roberto Barbieri sloot de dag af op de vijfde plaats. Herwin Hopmans was aan het begin van de eerste proef gevallen, maar herstelde zich knap in de kilometers daarna. Hij eindigde ondanks de schuiver in de top-tien en staat eveneens tiende in het klassement. Martien Jimmink reed de gehele dag in de buurt van de top-vijftien en was zeer tevreden. Jimmink is in het klassement opgeklommen tot de veertiende plaats. Marcel Piek werkte een solide dag af en was tevreden met zijn prestaties.    

Stefan Svitko sloot de derde dag in de Serres Rally opnieuw winnend af, maar de Nederlanders Wesley Pittens en Paul Spierings deden goede zaken in de lange derde etappe van de Griekse uithoudingsproef. Het meest opvallende nieuws van de dag was toch wel het uitvallen van Thorsten Kaiser. De Duitse coureur kwam in de eerste van drie proeven op maandag ten val en moest de wedstrijd verlaten met een polsbreuk. Kaiser, meervoudig winnaar van de Tuareg Rally in Marokko, stond tweede in het klassement en heeft ervoor gezorgd dat de marge richting Svitko enorm gegroeid is. De KTM-rijder was met name in de tweede proef van de dag erg snel en pakte daar een marge van zo’n twintig minuten op Pittens en Spierings. Spierings was in het eerste deel van de proef even verkeerd gereden waardoor de Pittens de aansluiting kreeg. Het vervolg van de proef reden ze om de schade richting Svitko te beperken, maar dat bleek redelijk lastig. Herwin Hopmans kende ook een goede dag. Hij reed de zesde tijd in de lange tweede proef en gaf zelf aan steeds beter in het ritme te komen. Hij schoof als gevolg van zijn prestatie in de tweede proef weer enkele plaatsen op in het klassement. Martien Jimmink besloot het na een goede tweede dag iets rustiger aan te doen op de lange derde dag waarin de kilometers toch flink hun tol eisten. Dinsdag trekt het deelnemersveld richting Bulgarije voor het eerste deel van de marathonetappe. De deelnemers rijden eerst zo’n 50 kilometer verbinding tot de Bulgaarse grens waarna ze een mooie proef voor de wielen krijgen.  

Achter topfavoriet Stefan Svitko is de strijd om de podiumplaatsen flink losgebarsten. Paul Spierings was met een vierde en een vijfde tijd in de twee specials van dag twee de beste Nederlander en is nu vierde in het algemeen klassement. Stefan Svitko heeft in twee dagen alweer een voorsprong opgebouwd van bijna een half uur. Daarachter zijn de verschillen echter klein en is er nog van alles mogelijk. Hoewel de specials in kilometers misschien niet heel lang waren (twee keer 120 kilometer) lag de gemiddelde snelheid niet hoog. Alleen Svitko wist een special binnen de twee uur uit te rijden. Dat zegt genoeg over de moeilijkheidsgraad van de Serres Rally. Wesley Pittens had een mindere dag en moest iets toegeven. Hij is nu 7e algemeen. Paul Spierings reed sterk en klom naar de vierde plek algemeen op 30.34 minuten van leider Svitko. Daarachter waren er nog een paar Nederlanders goed onderweg. Achter Pittens werd Peter Jansen met zijn 300 2-takt netjes 8e in proef 2, gevolgd door Martien Jimmink, die ook sterk reed. In het algemeen klassement is Jansen nu negende, Jimmink vijftiende. Vader en zoon Ensing rijden hun eerste rally en doen dat niet onverdienstelijk. Zoon Yves finishte als vijftiende in proef twee en vader Albert werd achttiende. Na een mindere proloog kon Dakar 2019 rijder Herwin Hopmans vandaag een hoop tijd goed maken. Hopmans werd 17e in proef twee en is ook 17e algemeen. Yamaha rijder Wesley Pittens is de Serres Rally 2018 goed begonnen met een tweede tijd in de twintig kilometer lange proloog, ruim een minuut achter winnaar Stefan Svitko uit Slowakije. Tweede beste Nederlander was Guillaume Martens op een prima zevende plaats, gevolgd door Paul Spierings op plaats elf. Wesley Pittens moest als tweede van start in de proloog, en kwam ook als tweede binnen. Pittens: ”Lekker genavigeerd en lekker gereden. Omdat ik als tweede van start ging had ik geen sporen om te volgen. Één keer stond ik even achterstevoren. Een keer steken en draaien en ik was er weer bij. De proef was aardig technisch, vooral in het laatste deel. Ik moest weer even wennen aan de iets zwaardere enduromotor in rallytrim, maar dat ging snel. Het doel voor dit jaar is om er dichter bij te zitten, dat is vandaag goed gelukt. We gaan het zien de rest van de week. Een podiumplek is reëel, maar het moet nog wel ‘even’ gebeuren.” Morgen gaat de rally verder met twee snelle specials, die qua navigatie niet te moeilijk zijn. Morgen staan er 84 motoren aan de start van de 2018 editie van de Serres Rally, met dit jaar een mooie Nederlandse inbreng waaronder vijf Dakar 2019 deelnemers met Wesley Pittens, Paul Spierings, Marcel Piek, Martien Jimmink en Herwin Hopmans. Om drie uur in de middag gaat de Serres Rally van start met een 25 kilometer lange proloog, die meteen al technisch flink uitdagend zal zijn. Stefan Svitko is de overduidelijke favoriet voor de zege, nu Ondrej Klymciw uiteindelijk niet zal starten. Wesley Pittens en Paul Spierings zijn de grootste kanshebbers op een topklassering. Pittens finishte vorig jaar als vierde, waarbij hij de moeilijke laatste special op zijn naam wist te schrijven. ”Ik kom met meer ervaring naar de start, heb veel gereden en hoop deze editie er dichter bij te zitten.” Na een showstart op zondagavond in het oude centrum van Serres gaat de rally op zondag verder met de eerste echte lange special.    

The Atacama Rally sees the full Monster Energy Honda Team back in action for Round Three of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. There won’t be any beach or holidays for the riders this summer, but they can, however, look forward to plenty of sand at the races.  Kevin Benavides, Paulo Gonçalves, Joan Barreda, Ricky Brabec and Nacho Cornejo, the five riders of the Monster Energy Honda Team, are en route to Chile this week to take part in the Atacama Rally whose points count towards the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. Four months have elapsed since the Monster Energy Honda Team competed in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the opening event of the world championship. The squad’s Argentine rider made it onto the podium on that occasion, while Gonçalves finished fifth and Brabec sixth. Nacho Cornejo became the top junior with an eighth overall place in the Middle East race. Joan Barreda, after recovering from the wrist operation he had undergone in mid-February, returned to competition for the following Merzouga Rally in April, where he made off with a hard-fought victory, while Benavides added to the team’s successes with second place on the rostrum alongside his team-mate. The Chilean race, which will have its nerve centre in the city of Copiapó, will start with the mandatory administrative and technical checks on Sunday, August 12, before the five Honda CRF450 RALLY can finally put pedal to the metal in the Atacama Desert. Over ruim drie weken, op 27 augustus, gaat de 8e editie van de Serres Rally van start. Een motorrally met altijd uitdagende routes en lastige navigatie. Dit jaar met een mooie inbreng vanuit Nederland. Zo’n 15 rijders verschijnen aan de start, waaronder ook een aantal Dakar 2019 deelnemers. In totaal staan er zo’n 90 motoren op de deelnemerslijst.  De winnaar van vorig jaar, Stefan Svitko uit Slowakije is er ook weer bij en is de te kloppen man. Afgelopen Dakar moest hij na een zware val opgeven terwijl hij 8e lag. Zijn grootste concurrent is de Tsjech Ondrej Klymciw, die Dakar 2017 als 12e finishte, maar in 2018 ook uitviel na een zeer zware crash. Vanuit Nederland zijn Paul Spierings en Wesley Pittens kanshebbers op een goede eindklassering. Beiden gaan in januari hun debuut maken in de Dakar, net als Martien Jimmink en Marcel Piek, die er in Griekenland ook bij zijn. Oud Dakar deelnemers Guillaume Martens en Erik Klomp staan ook op de lijst.  In kilometers lijkt de rally misschien niet al te lang, maar zeker de minder ervaren rijders zullen hun handen vol hebben aan de specials. Woensdag is een halve rustdag, waarna er een marathonetappe op het programma staat, die de deelnemers naar Bulgarije brengt. Er is dan een bivak in de bergen rondom Petrich. Er mag een half uur gesleuteld worden door de rijder zelf. Sibiu, Romania – 31 July, 2018 — Round four of the World Enduro Super Series saw Sherco Factory Racing’s Wade Young become the youngest ever winner of Red Bull Romaniacs. For five epic days of Enduro racing the 22-year-old South African battled both his rivals and the elements to secure the biggest victory of his career to date. Pushing to his absolute physical limits during each of the long and demanding days of racing, Young conquered the toughest Enduro terrain Romania had to offer and etched his name onto the winner’s list of the world-famous Hard Enduro Rallye. Congratulations Wade, how does it feel to have won the 15th edition of Red Bull Romaniacs! Wade Young: “Thanks. This race is probably the toughest Enduro race around so I’m really stoked on the win. It’s a hugely demanding event. It’s five days on a bike and you get pushed to your absolute physical limit. I’ve been trying for a while now to get it done and finally the winner’s trophy is mine. But thanks also go to my whole Sherco Factory Racing team, my mechanic and family and friends who’ve kept me going all week.” Entering the final day of racing you only had a small four-minute lead, were you nervous about that? “I felt like I was riding well all week and knew that I could do it. But also, Manuel Lettenbichler was riding good too and was keeping me honest. He was fast on the up hills but I managed to reel him in on the downhills and flowing sections of the course. It went like that for the whole day right until the last couple of checkpoints. I knew then it was a case of now or never and I just gave it everything I had. I rode at maximum attack for the final 20 kilometres.” What was the feeling like entering the final hillclimb in Gusterita, knowing you’d done enough to win? “I could hear the crowd cheering and the atmosphere was just pumping. The final hillclimb is always nervy because it’s so steep and easy to make a mistake. With the gap being so tight crashing there could have lost me the entire race. I wanted to celebrate but held back until the finish line and then once I passed the chequered flag the enormity of it all hit me. It was an unreal moment in my Enduro career.” Aside from winning the race, were there any other highlights for you during the Red Bull Romaniacs? “Probably just before the service point on off road day three. There we had the hardest climb of the race and I managed to pull a gap on the guys. Up until then the climbs were not my strongest asset and to just get it right and build a small lead felt awesome. It was a little victory in itself.” You’ve had multiple podium results here and now a win, what is it about the Red Bull Romaniacs that suits your style of riding? “I think it’s the long days — it’s not just all about technique. Somewhere like the Erzbergrodeo relies a lot on technique and trials riding, where for me Red Bull Romaniacs is a pure form of Enduro riding. It’s man and machine against the elements for as long as it takes each day. It’s the toughest and most physically demanding Enduro race in the world. It requires you to dig deep and that’s something I can do when the going gets tough. I feel like I showed that this week — there were some gnarly days for sure.” Finally, with a debut Red Bull Romaniacs win do you think you can keep that momentum going and claim a debut Red Bull 111 Megawatt victory? “I’d definitely like to. Although it’s completely different to here in Romania, it’s a race where I’ve finished on the podium before. De Roompot Baja Borger is de mooiste race van het NK ORR en een uniek evenement. Dat blijkt wel uit het feit dat in slechts een paar dagen de inschrijving helemaal vol liep. In totaal staan er op zaterdag 3 november 55 auto’s aan de start. Inschrijven kan alleen nog voor de reservelijst.  Achter de schermen zijn de voorbereidingen voor twee dagen racen in volle gang. Het is veel werk om met alle landeigenaren en lokale overheden alle goedkeuringen te krijgen en alles af te stemmen om mooie proeven uit te zetten op roadbook.  260 kilometer op roadbook In totaal staan er vijf klassementsproeven op het programma, met een totale lengte van 260 kilometer, en dit jaar voor het eerst ook een nachtproef. Contested from 31 March to 5 April 2019, edition 10 of the Dakar Series Merzouga Rally will also serve as the venue for “The Ultimate Race”. It is in fact the ultimate event of the “KTM Adventures Rallies”. This four-continent, six-race programme brings together enthusiasts of the brand. Wels, Austria – July 10, 2018 — At round four of the World Enduro Super Series competitors face Romania’s infamous Red Bull Romaniacs. A truly unique event, the Hard Enduro Rallye features a multi-day format and will feature some of the most breathtaking Enduro riding seen in this year’s championship. From the heart of Sibiu out into the wilderness of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains, a memorable week of world class Enduro riding is promised for the 500 competitors from 53 nations competing. For its 15th edition, the race also features a fresh twist – two overnight bivouacs for competitors. With preparations well underway, Red Bull Romaniacs mastermind Martin Freinademetz explains what riders can expect to find as the race to become this year’s ULTIMATE ENDURO CHAMPION continues… Martin, with the 15th edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs fast approaching how are preparations going for round four of WESS? Martin Freinademetz: “Everything is coming together nicely for the 15th edition of the Red Bull Romaniacs. I think we have a lot of nice trails we can use this year and we will also visit some areas we haven’t been to since some of the earliest editions of the race. For our organising team it’s very much a 12-month process preparing for the race and no matter how ready we feel it’s always very busy in the build-up to the race. But things are looking good – everything is falling into place and I’m confident people will really enjoy what’s on offer in Romania.” With 53 nationalities represented the race is seemingly more popular than ever this year! “After 15 years the popularity of Red Bull Romaniacs is not fading. This year the entries were completely sold out after one day of opening. We have about 500 riders from 53 nations competing, which makes it the largest Enduro race on the calendar in terms of different nationalities. Again, the United Kingdom is the largest with 86 competitors, but Australia, Germany, Austria and now Russia are strongly represented. There are riders from all continents of the world racing. I believe the reason for this is that the race offers something for everybody regardless of ability. It’s five days on your bike with a lot of beautiful memories to take away from it.” Part of WESS for 2018, what do you feel Red Bull Romaniacs will add to the championship? “We’re very proud to be part of the WESS championship for 2018. I feel the nature of Red Bull Romaniacs fits well with the mixed-discipline aspect of the series. We are a Hard Enduro race but the kind of riding we have is not solely Hard Enduro, it covers all types of terrain. Some sections are extreme, but a lot of it is very fast and flowing. Also factoring in the Rallye aspect adds another dimension to our round. It’s very much man and machine out in the wilderness. You have to survive with just the tools you carry and for me that is Enduro.” Along with organising round four of WESS you also competed in rounds one and three – Extreme XL Lagares and Trèfle Lozérien AMV – did you enjoy it? “I am a race organiser by trade but I’m an Enduro rider at heart and so I wanted to experience other events I hadn’t ridden before. I really enjoyed both races, especially the Trèfle Lozérien AMV Classic Enduro, which was very new for me. It’s important to push myself like that, while maybe also learning new ways and ideas that can be applied to my own race. I hope to race some more WESS rounds before the year is over.” How do you prepare the course for four unique days of Enduro riding at Red Bull Romaniacs?  “As the event has grown over the years so too has the staff and man power required to put on an Enduro race of this scale. Each of the four off road days are at least 160 kilometres long, but we actually mark well over 200 kilometres so riders of all categories have an almost unique route for each day. In the past the Bronze route was the main track, with Gold and Silver loops added on. Now Gold riders will stay to their own course for the majority of the day and this eases the passage of traffic on the terrain. To do this we’ve increased the number of track managers. What was once two track managers has increased to four or sometimes six people. In total the race requires about 20 track managers, plus a foot crew of 10-15 people who help clear tracks or de-mark post event.” We’ll see the return of the overnight bivouac to this year’s race, why is that? “We’ve reintroduced the bivouac for 2018 and will spend two nights away from Sibiu. However, unlike previous editions, both nights will be in the same location, which eases the logistics for those following the race. The reason for this is to discover new and fresh trails. There is some real wilderness riding to be found here — untouched with no braking bumps or ruts. Even if you are a seasoned Romaniacs rider these days will be new for you.” Finally, Sibiu’s City Prologue, which opens the event, is synonymous with Red Bull Romaniacs. What wacky obstacles are being planned for this year? “The City Prologue is an iconic part of Red Bull Romaniacs. In terms of the overall results it’s not so important, but it is something that’s very special to us. Although a lot of people are now coming out into the mountains to watch the real enduro action, it’s good to bring the sport to the people in the city who can’t. My good friend Andy Fazekas is the mastermind behind it and every year he surprises me with his creations. With this being the 15th edition of the race he’s got some wacky ideas in store, so we’ll have to wait until prologue day to see what he’s got planned this time around.” Round four of the World Enduro Super Series takes place at Red Bull Romaniacs in Sibiu, Romania on July 24-28. The day before the last day.. there is a special tension in the bivouac as the mechanics prepares the vehicles for the last time, the drivers and co-drivers recover from the day and weigh their chances for the stage tomorrow.. Today was the seventh stage of the Rallye Breslau Poland, an almost perfect day in the forest north of Miastko, with a fast and exciting roadbook and two seperate stages, around Dretyn and Bobolice. ”Today was the best stage ever this week, wow!” says Jim Marsden. ”It made me think of the nicest races I’ve done in my life, with a fantastic mix of fast tracks, technical sections and the odd swamp to cross. Even though we did not win today, I was impressed.’ Tomorrow he will try to win the Rallye Breslau Poland, but Romain Porchere is a tough competitor. ”He is such a determined guy, fantastic. We went up and down this week, but he has produced straight and stable results. It would be a deserved win, but I am definitely trying to keep him away from that spot on the podium!” ”When Grzegorz called me to navigate in the Dacia here, he said he wanted to go for the win”, says Grzegorz Kamar, the co-pilot of the white Dacia. ”I laughed at him, I though he was aiming too high. But we decided to go for it and the results so far have been beyond my expectation. We are breaking the system with our Dacia! It was not easy to get here, we had our share of issues. One day we lost the rear differential and we drove 150km on front wheel drive.. it was tough, we had to think ahead about every step. And now we need one more thing, and that is to finish tomorrow evening!” Nikke Harkjaer tried to make an end to his participation in the Breslau today, crashing his quad in a low speed corner along a steep hill. ‘I was surprised by a ditch, and before I knew it the quad rolled down the hill. Somehow I have lost my low speed skills, I don’t know what happened. But MArcin was there in no-time and together we managed to get it back on the track. Now it’s just plastic, a steering rod and some small things. Tomorrow we are racing for the last time, I look forward to it!’ Racing a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Frank Amsallem and Amelie Perrin put their trial-experience to work in the Polish forests. ”Today everyone overtook us in the swamp”, says Amelie. ”The pneumatic switch of the winch did not work and we got stuck until I found out it was just a simple problem. But we are here to drive each day and finish.” After three years of building the car, it performs above expectation. ”We did not have any big problems, and we are really pleased to be here with all these experienced teams!” Breaking the steering arm of his Scania for the second time this rally, Hans van Geest created a nice situation for the recovery crew of Achim Lust. Putting the 8×8 truck to work, they drove a truck-trial section with the Scania on tow. It was a fantastic piece of work and a confidence booster for Truck Team Holten who expected to stay in the forest overnight while fixing the Scania on the track. ‘The recovery team did an awesome job, and even though we are sad to loose our first place in the ranking it was quite an adventure!” Tomorrow is the last day, and the Breslau has always been decided, lost or won on the last stage. We expect fireworks this year with a magnificent route around the Miastko forestry. No loops or circles but 145 km of pure rally-raid through the unique landscape of Pomerania in Northern Poland. Small tracks, fire roads, logging tracks, forests, fields and villages are the backdrop of today’s stage, a fantastic chase across the Polish countryside and a true ‘finale’ of the Rallye Breslau Poland 2018! Leaving Drawsko Pomorski the teams say goodbye to this fantastic region. The Rallye Breslau Poland moves to the north-west, to the second stage of today and the last bivouac in Gwda Wielka. Starting in the afternoon in Drawsko, it took until 17:30 before the first competitor started in the superfast and sandy second stage on the Czarne polygon. Here the evening light created a magic feeling for the competitors, as they were racing towards the sunset.. Remy Kusy opened the track today, chasing the fastest overall time set by Nikke Harkjaer. In the Cross Country ranking the quads take the lead, with fantastic speed and sportmanship. Marcin Talaga joins their battle after the first stage, showing excellent speed on the Czarne Polygon, making a place for himself in between the two front runners. Remy Kusy had the disadvantage of opening the stage, finishing as third rider in Gwda Mala.  Tomasz Wojtyra in his Can AM and Jaroslaw Andrzejewski in the fast Toyota are chasing each other for the fastest time on four wheels. Both have experience in the sand and with the navigation, and the battle between these two Polish teams racing on their own soil is fantastic. Even though Tomasz wins the stage, Jaroslaw is smiling from ear to ear after the stage. It was a fast and succesful day for him with almost 15 minutes lead over the next competitor in Car Cross Country. The evening light over the Czarne Polygon is beautiful, showing the colors of the moorland, the flowers and the forest. Not all racers will recognize this, but part of the Rallye Breslau Poland is the adventure, the driving pleasure and the ability to see beautiful places otherwise closed for the general public. Drawsko Pomorski has this flair, just as the Czarne area. These places have seen all sides of the recent history, and the Rallye Breslau Poland fills them with international competition and friendship. In the Extreme Class Romain Porchere leads the stage all the way from Drawsko to Czarne, flying with his white-blue proto. All the front runners from yesterday had issues – Franck Daurelle’s engine took water in the ‘Ladoga’ swamp, Jim Marsden had to help his assistance on the route and the Hertwig brothers lost almost 1:30h in Drawsko – today shows that in the Breslau anything can happen! It was fantastic!” Marzena Kaczmarek is cheering at the finishline, ‘We had such a great day! After yesterdays problems, now we took our revenge!” The little yellow trophy car is piloted by Marzena and navigated by her fiancé, Bartosz Kulpinski. ”We race together because it brings us together. To be in the mud, to be sweaty and dirty and to achieve goals together. And on a day like this, it is perfect!” Kay Messner wins the Extreme Truck class today, ahead of Patrick Toepfer (Unimog) and Thomas Pohle (IFA). the trucks fly across the stage today, with only a few special extreme points and mostly fast flowing sand and forest tracks. ‘It was a fast day, very nice driving with the truck!’ according to a cheerful Kay at the finishline. His MAN KAT is far from standard, but still a basic and tough army truck and accessible for everyone who knows to handle a pair of spanners. Tomorrow, the competitors drive two stages around the villages of Dretyn and Bobolice. Heading north they go deep into the forests, on old and sinuous tracks that offer a fantastic riding experience before reaching modern wood production areas with their remarkable logging tracks. In the second half of the stage the landscape changes, with fast long straights, open spaces and speed before reaching the finish line near Kawcze. Link to live results
