NL || HAIL  –  Een week van afwisselend succes en tegenslag heeft Team de Rooy FPT een roerige eerste week in de Dakar Rally opgeleverd. Halverwege is één ding wel duidelijk: de Iveco’s van de drie equipes zijn tiptop, maar pech is soms moeilijk te voorkomen. Tijdens de rustdag in Hail was de sfeer in het topteam in ieder geval positief en de crewleden waren optimistisch gestemd.

“De auto’s hebben vandaag een grote onderhoudsbeurt gehad. Morgen staan ze weer spik en span aan de start voor de tweede helft van de Dakar Rally”, zei teammanager Henk van Leuven in het bivak. “Ondanks de tegenslagen zijn we optimistisch en ook tevreden over de eerste week.”

Berusting

Zo won Aleš Loprais de derde etappe en werd debutant bij de trucks Vaidotas Žala een keer tweede. En Anja van Loon werd donderdag heel knap vierde tijdens de tweede dag van de marathonetappe. Helaas hoorde er dus ook pech bij, maar bij De Rooy FPT heerst daarover vooral berusting.

“De teams weten dat tegenslagen erbij horen. De moed zit erin. Loprais zegt dat hij blijft vechten voor een toppositie, Žala richt zich op een plek in top vijf en Anja wil het zo voortzetten.”

Wat Van Leuven vooral is opgevallen is de uitstekende onderlinge sfeer tussen de drie equipes binnen Team de Rooy FPT. “Elk jaar hebben we een team met absolute topmonteurs. Maar dit jaar klikt het ook nog eens erg goed tussen de mannen onderling. De teams helpen elkaar verder bij andere auto’s als dat nodig is. Daar hoef je als teammanager niet eens om te vragen.”

Laat maar komen
En dus heerste over de tweede week een gevoel van ‘laat maar komen’ bij Team de Rooy FPT. “We gaan de tweede helft van de Dakar optimistisch tegemoet. Macík heeft natuurlijk een grote voorsprong, maar het is nog niet gezegd dat hij de Dakar gaat winnen.”

Van Leuven: “Een grote voorsprong kan in een halve dag als sneeuw voor de zon verdwijnen. We gunnen niemand tegenslagen, maar pech kan Macík ook overkomen. Dat is ook de rallysport, dat is ook Dakar. En de wedstrijd is pas afgelopen op de laatste dag van de finish. Het is nog lang niet afgelopen.”  

ENG || HAIL  – A week of alternating successes and setbacks has given Team de Rooy FPT a turbulent first week in the Dakar Rally. Halfway through, one thing is clear: the Ivecos of the three crews are in top form, but bad luck is sometimes hard to avoid. At least during the rest day in Hail, the atmosphere in the team was positive and the crew members were optimistic.-

“The cars had a major service today. Tomorrow, they will be ready for the second half of the Dakar Rally”, said team manager Henk van Leuven in the bivouac. “Despite the setbacks, we are optimistic and satisfied with the first week.”

Perseverance
Aleš Loprais won the third stage and truck debutant Vaidotas Žala was second. And Anja van Loon was fourth on the second day of the marathon stage on Thursday. Unfortunately, there was also bad luck, but De Rooy FPT is all about perseverance.

“The teams know that setbacks are part of the game. The courage is there. Loprais says he will continue to fight for a top position, Žala is aiming for a place in the top five and Anja wants to continue like this.”

Overall, Van Leuven has noticed the excellent atmosphere between the three crews within Team de Rooy FPT. “Every year, we have a team with absolute top mechanics. But this year, there is also an excellent relationship between the men themselves. The teams help each other out with other cars when needed. As a team manager, I don’t even have to ask for it.”

Bring it on
And so, during the second week, there was a ‘bring it on’ feeling at Team de Rooy FPT. “We are optimistic for the second half of the Dakar. Macík has a big lead, but it is not yet certain that he will win the Dakar.”

Van Leuven: “A big lead can disappear like snow in half a day. We don’t begrudge anyone setbacks, but bad luck can also happen to Matíc. That’s rallying, that’s Dakar. And the race is not over until the last day. It’s far from over.”
