Al-Balooshi en Al-Musallam pakken de winst tijdens Dubai International Baja

Mohammed Al Balooshi (KTM) overwon een teleurstellende openingsdag, hield stand op dag twee en profiteerde van het uitvallen van de eerste podiumwinnaar Aaron Mare en Mohammed Jaffar om vervolgens de overwinning te behalen in de openingsronde van het 2018 FIM Wereldkampioenschap cross-country Bajas, de Dubai International Baja. De ongelukkige Zuid-Afrikaanse Aaron Mare leverde een verbluffende eerste dag, maar na 91 kilometer van de tweede etappe moest hij stoppen met mechanische problemen en moest hij de wedstrijd verlaten. Zijn tegenslag gaf Al-Balooshi uitzicht op een overwinning, maar het laatste deel van de tweede speciale stage van 273 km door de Al-Qudra woestijn was ook niet gemakkelijk voor de Emirati-rijder. Al-Balooshi zei: “Het was waanzin vandaag, ik viel hard aan en ik nam geen gas terug tot ik de finish passeerde. Bij het tanken had ik de indruk dat er verwarring was mijn teamgenoten. De rest van de special heb ik met angst in mijn maag gereden, denkenden dat ik misschien niet genoeg brandstof had om af te maken” Fransman Benjamin Melot werd tweede, maar hij had ook een stressvolle special gehad: “We hebben vandaag heel snel gereden. Opeens had ik problemen met de achterrem en daarna met de versnellingsbak. De laatste 30 km ben ik in de derde versnelling blijven rijden, ik ben blij dat ik klaar ben en in goede conditie ben.” Sultan Al-Balooshi’s, Mohammed jongere broer, rondde de podium af. “Het was erg heet vandaag en aan het begin van de special kwam ik ten val. Gelukkig wist ik de finish te halen en eindigde ik op de derde plaats!” Bij de quads ging de overwinning naar Fahad Al-Musallam. Voor het tweede achtereenvolgende seizoen, ondanks enkele fouten. De Koeweitse rijder eindigde voor de Emirati Khalifa Al-Rasse, die de problemen overwon die hem gisteren nog de das om deden. De Russische rijder Aleksander Maksimov werd derde. Al-Balooshi and Al-Musallam take bike and quad wins in Dubai International Baja

Mohammed Al Balooshi (KTM) overcame a disappointing opening day, raised his game on day two and took advantage of the retirement of first stage winner Aaron Mare and Mohammed Jaffar to seal victory in the Dubai International Baja, the opening round of the 2018 FIM Cross-Country Bajas World Cup. The unfortunate South African Aaron Mare delivered a stunning first day performance, but found himself stopped with mechanical problems on the second stage, after 91km, and was forced to retire. I am happy to have finished and to be in good shape!” Al-Balooshi’s younger brother Sultan rounded off the podium places. “It was very hot today and, at the beginning of the special, I fell. Luckily, I finished and in third place!” In the quad category, the victory went to Fahad Al-Musallam for the second successive season, despite some mistakes on the track. The Kuwaiti rider finished ahead of the Emirati Khalifa Al-Rasse, who solved the problems that handicapped him yesterday. Russian rider Aleksander Maksimov was third.
