Despite a half rest day, some shifts in Tuareg Rally [Photos ]
A small rest day with a short but challenging special. Maikel Verkade proved to have no problems, he won the stage in front of Torsten Kaiser. Verkades nearest rival, James Ford, lost time again.
Verkade built his lead mainly in the dunes. Torsten Kaiser could follow somewhat but also lost a few minutes. The big today loser was Martin van den Brink. The number five in the rankings could not reach a hidden CP and received no less than twelve hours penalty. The dutchmen dives back in the rankings.
The last hurdle in the special was, as in previous years, the steep dune with a checkpoint on the top. Many participants had trouble with this dune and lost valuable time.
In the cars standings, father and daughter Broomans are still in the lead. Also today the profited again from the other participants and good conditions. In the early morning, you can ride the dunes pretty well if it's still cool. They benefit from the experienced Ronald Broomans because he knows how to make good use of it.
This is his third year together in the car with daughter Wendy. In the first two years, they compete in the amateur class, this year the duo got into the professional class.
Marc Leeuw had after a disastrous day yesterday a lot better in today's stage. Leeuw won the stage and went, in his own words, much better than the previous day when he left the special prematurely.
Tomorrow the participants return to Zagora. First they will drive a lap through the dunes and after some fast tracks they make major steps towards the finish.
