Kaiser wins again, Verkade increases his lead [Photos]
Torsten Kaiser also won the third stage in the Tuareg Rally. The German was the fastest in the 300-kilometer special stage between Zagora and Merzouga. The special was again divided into two parts with a piece of quick tracks. In the second part, the pros had to step up their game for some challenging dunes passages.
Maikel Verkade has increased his lead in the standings. While the Dutchman did not win but he saw the competition in the name of James Ford losing time. The British crashed and injured his forearm. The victory went, just like on the second day, to Torsten Kaiser who has given up for the standings because of a time penalty on the first day.
The other Dutch riders did well with Kay Bulsink and Martin van den Brink in the top five. Van den Brink stated at the end that it is important to hold rhythm in the dunes because the problems take so much energy.
New to the field is Matt Hunt. The Englishman is the brother of Harry Hunt who drives his X-raid Mini in the rally raids. Hunt was originally a road racer and debuting in the rally raids with this Tuareg Rally. Hunt can keep up well on speed but technically he loses it.
In the trucks standings, Marc Leeuw is still tentative. Leeuw brought his truck today successfully through the dunes and is still in the lead in the trucks standings.
This technical aspect will be important on Wednesday when the king stage is planned. This special is about 230 kilometers but consists entirely of sand dunes and because of that it will be very challenging. For the newcomers it will be a rest day, other drivers might do two laps and a select group will drive the entire stage.
