A changing day around Zagora, Verkade still in the lead [Photos]
Today the participants had to ride a stage consisting of three specials around Zagora. The day began with fast special but in the second special it changed quickly.
Shortly after a small piece of asphalt Motorbike Pro's got to a steep climb with many stones that looked more like a goat track. But it paid off to get to the top, and for some even walk to it, because at the top there was a hidden waypoint. For riders who have missed this waypoint there was a penalty of four hours waiting at the finish.
In the third and final special of the day the participants had to conquer some dunes. The Motorbike Pro's had to deal with some big dunes near Erg Chegaga while the Amateurs had to do a shorter route to the finish. This last stretch before the finish turned out to be challenging enough, especially for the cars.
Maikel Verkade is still the leader in the Motorbike Pro standings, Verkade drove it on safe today and because of this he lost some time. After being careful on the fierce climb he could make up some time in the dunes and became fifth today. He maintains its leadership position in the standings with 15 minutes ahead of the No. 2 Max Hunt.
In the cars standings, father and daughter Broomans got in the lead after the second time yesterday. Also newcomer Kay Bulsink had a good day, he is driving his first rally very well with a second position in the Motorbike Amateurs yesterday. What Bulsink did today is not yet known. Van den Brink is in 10th position.
The stage of tomorrow will lead the riders along a long special from Zagora to Merzouga. This promises to be a long but fast track.
