Libya Rally 2016: coast to coast

Three months after the finish of the previous edition in Marrakesh, the preparations of the 8th edition of the Libya Rally (14th – 21st April 2016) have started already. At this very moment and despite the high temperatures, our sportive director Jean-Claude Kaket and his crew are in the south of Morocco, enthusiastically looking for new race tracks and dream locations for the many different bivouacs. Meanwhile in the office, together with our agents, new plans are being made to make the Libya Rally even more attractive to a broad international audience. In this newsletter we’ll give you an update on the new routes, the upcoming national presentations,  the different  rally-categories, GPS Unik & Sentinel and so much more. 

1. The 7 stages: the ultimate cross-country rally from Coast to Coast

Next year Libya Rally will once more be the only real cross-country rally in Morocco. After the success of the previous edition with more than 300 participants & mechanics, the new trend in rallying was obvious: most racers prefer to explore the country completely, rather than just driving in circles around the dunes of Merzouga or Mhamid. 

Traditionally the Libya Rally is known for offering a large variety of landscapes. In 2016 we’ll break all records: “From Coast to Coast”, from Agadir & TanTan at the Atlantic Ocean to Saïdia by the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. 2700 km in 7 completely different stages with nearly no liaison. With ever changing landscapes and terrains, each day again we’ll guarantee you the ultimate cross-country rally. 

On 14th April 2016 the scruteneering will take place in Agadir. This mundane coastal city is strategically a very interesting location: a popular airport with connections to many European cities, good hotels and easily accessible from the port of Tanger by highway.

On 21st April 2016 the finish will take place in Saïdia, in a Mediterranean Bay with turquoise waters and long, white beaches. The event finishes on a Thursday night, so a weekend extra to go sailing, diving or playing golf is not a bad option.

We’ll reveal the details of what’s going to happen between Agadir and Saïdia from mid-September onwards, however, just like every year the 7 stages, all together 2700 km and almost no “liaison”, will contain every ingredient a rally-fan can dream of: fast tracks as well as technical stages, wide African plains, many dunes, salt lakes, new unknown tracks as well as old legendary Paris-Dakar stages, and so much more. The map gives you a rough idea already; a detailed description will follow shortly.

2. A rally for everybody thanks to our 4 options

    Category 1 – “Rally Pro” 

    Category 2 – “Rally Adventure” 

    Category 3 – “Discovery Raid”

    Category 4 – “Meet & Greet / VIP”

Once again, just like in 2015, we’ll split up the timed RALLY in 2 different categories: “Rally Pro” and “Rally Adventure”, both with a separate ranking.

2.1. The RALLY-PRO category is “the real stuff”, open to the more experienced drivers of cars, trucks, buggies, SSV’s, quads and motorbikes. You navigate using a FIA-style road book and the GPS UNIK 2. This device, built by the French company ERTF, is used in all world championship rallies (FIA/FIM) and long distance rallies/raids like the Dakar, Africa Race, etc.. And it can be rented via the organisation.

Built-in this device is also the “Sentinel”, a kind of alarm/warning system which allows safe overtaking. If you want to overtake another rider you push the button of your Sentinel, the pilot driving in front of you gets a warning on his device (alarm & stroboscopic light). 

The introduction of these systems (GPS UNIK & Sentinel) in 2015 made the rally more professional, a lot safer and allows the race director to publish a correct ranking in a very short time frame. Plus: being able to practice with this tool in the -relatively cheap- Libya Rally, is ideal if you have the ambition to do a Dakar or another FIA/FIM rally in the future.

2.2. In RALLY-ADVENTURE category  you navigate by using our detailed road books and a standard GARMIN GPS on which you can see all obligatory waypoints permanently, making navigation a bit more easy. You also have a Sentinal system for your own safety. 

From 2016 onwards, the distances in both rally categories, are the same.

2.3. Traditionally we also have a Discovery (Raid) category, an off-road challenge via the same rally tracks for those who do not care about their time but rather join Libya Rally for the adventure and to follow the event in the footsteps of the rally pilots. Here the rules have changed too and technology has been introduced.

The rental of a TRIPY is however included in the registration fee. This device, a combination of GPS, digital roadbook and tripmaster, makes navigating a lot easier. Seen the fact that the roadbook is digitalised and the machine has a GPS-function, the TRIPY puts you back on track after you’ve made an occasional navigation mistake.

There will also be a Discovery Raid Responsible to whom the participant in this category can address to, both in the bivouac as well as on the track. In this category you can participate with your own car or with a rental car. (Depending on the model, you pay between 120€ and 200€ per day.)

2.4. Meet & Greet / VIP: Under the motto “the more the merrier “,we’ll also offer the possibility to live the spirit of the rally to friends and partners.Together with the company GPT Rally (who organises many VIP travels for ASO and the Dakar) we are putting together an unforgettable 4 days package including a 2 nights in the rally bivouac and of course the finishing party in Saïdia.

3. National presentations:

Mid-September 2015, just like every year, we’ll start with a road show all over Europe. During these evenings we’ll present to you the rally, the new route, the race rules, the different categories, transport & assistance options, and so much more. We’ll also answer face-to-face every possible question you may have. Detailed info about these presentations will appear soon on our website, Facebook page and via newsletters and Twitter. The first dates are already known:

Belgium (Wallonia): 15th September – Quartier Latin – Marche-En-Famenne

Belgium (Flanders): 17th September – Desert Foxx Racing  – Antwerp

Holland: 24th September – Verkooyen Machinery – Vessem (Eindhoven)

France: 21st November – Ténéré Rally Team - Lyon

Italy: x November – Wine cellars of Domain Guerrieri-Rizzardi - Bardolino

Spain - United Kingdom: to be confirmed


 

As always Libya Rally 2016 will stand for:

· Safety first: 1 or 2 helicopters, 4x4 ambulances, a reanimation unit & a large medical staff.

· 7 Dakar-worthy  stages with an average of 300-400 kilometers per day; all off-road, so hardly no “liaisons”.

· Great variation when it comes to landscapes: Libya Rally is a real cross-country rally. 

· Perfect FIA-style road books, personally written by our race director Jean-Claude Kaket (14xDakar, finished 12/14). All roadbooks are verified three times and are written according to FIA/FIM regulations. Motorbikers get them on a roll.

· Recovery of vehicles and injured racers is being guaranteed by a large fleet of sweeper trucks and medics. 

· Fingerlicking good catering, never seen before on a rally. No french breakfast (bread butter, jam) or couscous every day, but massive breakfast, freshly made sandwiches on checkpoints and 3-course meals in the evening, including smoked salmon, big BBQ’s, chateaubriand, Belgian beers, good wines, etc. 

· Briefings in 4 different languages and a unique athmosphere of competition on the race track but team spirit and fun in the camp every night.

As you can see we’re not sitting on our lazy butts but we’re doing everything possible to make the Libya Rally 2016 a memorable edition, different from any other rally.
